Alfalfa

Alfalfa, also known as Medicago sativa, is a perennial, clover-like, leguminous plant belonging to the pea family (Fabaceae).

Alfalfa is remarkable for its tolerance of drought, heat, and cold, as well as its high productivity and quality. It is widely grown primarily for hay, pasturage, and silage.

The plant is also valued for soil improvement and is cultivated as a cover crop and green manure.

 Alfalfa is commonly grown as feed for livestock animals. In human diets, it is sometimes consumed as a garnish and is believed to aid in preventing cholesterol absorption in the stomach.

When grown in well-adapted soils, alfalfa is often the highest-yielding forage plant due to its combination of high yield per hectare and excellent nutritional quality.
